Myth says that Paxos had been created by the ancient greek god Poseidon (ruler of the seas), as he cut off the southern part of Corfu using his trident weapon, in order to have a peaceful resort for him and his love, the nereid Amphitriti. Another version of this myth says that the god Poseidon had striken his trident on the sea, at the void space between Corfu island and Lefkas island, and through the whitecaps of the see Paxos magicaly had appeared. For this reason, the local symbol of Paxos island is the Trident.
